Dalseter
 |
- Pronunciation guide:
Dal-sayter
About 35 km west of the little town of Vinstra, Dalseter
Høyfjellshotel sits on the watershed between two valleys, Espedalen and
Vinstradalen. It is at the northwest end of the Peer Gynt Ski Region, a
vast network of over 600 km of interconnected cross-country ski tracks.
In practice, you have access to maybe 200 km of these tracks. Some are
prepared by the usual large machines; others by snowscooter. Some keep
to the shelter of the forest; others wind over the high fells that march
westward to the high summits of the Jotunheim.
The great variety of terrain allows us to offer most
levels of skiing for groups. Beginners will enjoy the relatively easy
tracks to the north of the hotel, and also along the shore of
Espedalsvatn lake. More experienced track skiers can make a circuit of
Ruten, at 1516m the highest peak in the area, or cross Ruten’s flank on
a memorable track that leads over the mountains and down finally to
Strand Fjellstue. Or they can sample the loipe on the south side of the
valley, which in places climb to 1300m.

Downhill pistes
Our hotel has its own piste. It is fairly gentle, with a length of 750m and
a height difference of 140m. A half-day card costs NOK 220 (adult) or NOK 185
(child) payable locally. Downhill ski equipment can be hired at the hotel.
Pausing
Our hotel has two mountain huts, beside the loipe, which guests can use as
picnic stops. On most days in the season they are warmed by log stoves. There
are three other hotels in Espedalen and you can eat your packed lunch in their
lounges if you
buy a drink.
Local transport
A public bus runs up Espedalen most afternoons, reaching Dalseter at about
16.30. Our groups may use it (at extra cost) on some days. Our Level 1
groups may use the hotel’s minibus on some days for short journeys to extend
their range of skiing.
