Pronunciation guide: Fay-for or Fef-for
(you can choose!)
About 15km west of the town of Vinstra, Fefor Hoyfjellshotel has a superb location overlooking the frozen lake
Feforvatn. Beyond the lake, to the south, the ground rises in stages and
climbs eventually to a high rolling upland at about 1400m. It is a fine
area in which to go skiing, and the hotel makes an excellent base.
Dating from 1891 the hotel was originally a
sanatorium and its first guests were city dwellers who came for the
mountain air. Then in 1903 the owners hit on
the idea of promoting winter tourism. The idea - we know - caught on.
And at Fefor it caught on quickly, with some celebrated people signing
the early registers. The Norwegian royal family were regular guests, as
was the Queen of the Netherlands. The explorer Fridtjof Nansen was
another frequent visitor, and Britain`s R.F. Scott stayed here in 1910
when preparing for his second expedition to the South Pole. On the
lounge wall there are photographs of Scott testing his snow tractors.
