Kandersteg
 |
|
Kandersteg, in the Bernese Oberland, encapsulates the best of
Switzerland: high altitude skiing, achingly beautiful scenery and an attractive village
that has steadfastly resisted over-development.
Kandersteg is situated at about 1200m
in a wide bowl at the head of the Kander valley. Impressively steep
mountains tower up on all sides, and for once the phrase "breath-taking
scenery" is genuinely deserved.

XC tracks
About 40km of tracks wind around the village - many are cut
for skating as well as classic technique. Above Kandersteg there are
more options at Oeschinensee (1600m) which you reach by chairlift, and
at Sunnbuel (1900m) which you reach by cable-car. You can also take the
train to the next valley, the Lotschental where there is about 25km of loipe.
Kandersteg has a floodlit track.
Downhill pistes
There are pistes at Oeschinensee and at Sunnbuel.
Pausing
There are cafes and restaurants at all the skiing areas.
Local transport
Kandersteg is very well served by public transport: local buses, railway,
chairlift, cable-car. Our package includes a Swiss Card which brings
half-price reductions on some forms of local transport. You should allow
about CHF60 for local transport.
