Navigation/fitness walking - UK based
We are registered with nnas
(the national navigation award scheme). We
offer non-residential two-day courses in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, which work towards the nnas Bronze and Silver awards.
On nnas courses the maximum group size is four students and one instructor.
The main emphasis is on learning navigational skills but on all courses you can
expect to burn off several hundred calories and to improve your fitness.
Bronze Level Dorney,
Buckinghamshire.
The next Bronze course will be in Spring 2012.
We start and finish each day at Eton Wick. For much of the course we will be
on linear paths, sometimes alongside the Thames and Jubilee Rivers,
sometimes on the edge of Eton. On these paths we build skills in
basic map-reading and learn to estimate time and distance. We also take
advantage of the wide open spaces at Dorney Common to work with the compass:
taking bearings and using simplification techniques such as "aiming-off"
and using "attack points". By the end of the course you should have the confidence to plan your own
routes over lowland terrain. (You should also feel quite well-exercised, as we
will walk for 5-6 hours each day.)
The course costs ₤90 per person, including the loan of map and compass.
This course combines training and assessment. Successful candidates receive a
certificate and cloth badge.
Silver Level
Dorney and an area of woodland near Burnham Beeches,
Buckinghamshire
The next Silver course will be in Spring 2012.
The course
will reinforce and develop the skills learned at bronze level. The emphasis will
be on locating subtle features, on relocation strategies, and on improving the
accuracy of map-measurement and interpretation. By the end of the course you should feel that you are a very competent
navigator. (And - as for the bronze course - you should also feel quite
well-exercised, as we will walk for 5-6 hours each day.)
The course costs ₤90 per person, including the loan of map and compass.
This course combines training and assessment. Successful candidates receive a
certificate and cloth badge.
Navigational competence for charity events
We also offer one-day courses for people preparing for charity events - such as
mountain challenges - for which the charity requires a statement of basic
navigational competence. We have helped teams prepare for the Three Peaks
Challenge, the 24 Peaks Challenge and others. These courses are outside the nnas scheme. Our main venue is Dorney and surrounding area (see description above).
We arrange your course on a day to suit your team. Price is
₤140 per team per day. Maximum number of participants is four. For more details please email us at enquiries@xcuk.com.
