Snowshoeing
Our snowshoeing holidays are aimed at people who want to
experience and enjoy the winter landscape without clipping into a pair
of skis. We base them at two of our popular centres in Norway and we
schedule them in the second half of the season, when the snowpack should
be consolidated and we should be able to go where we wish over the
unbroken snow.
To enjoy these holidays you do not need any special
skills, for snowshoeing is very easy to learn. But you do need a
reasonable level of fitness.
Good-quality modern snowshoes are included in the
package, as are ski poles.
You need to bring sturdy leather walking boots, with
fairly stiff soles, and you should also have gaiters. In general you
should dress as for winter walking, using the layering principle: with a
wickable base-layer, mid-layer fleece or pullover and good windproof and
waterproof outer layer.
On all of our snowshoe holidays you can expect satisfyingly long
outings. At Level S1 we will be walking for about 5 hours each day, on
terrain that is best described as "rolling". We may reach some low
summits but the main aim is simply to explore and enjoy the landscape.
At Level S2 we will be out for 6 or 7 hours a day and - weather
permitting - on some days we will climb moderately strenuous peaks,
gaining up to 500m on the way.
